For the Love of Water and Caffeine
Your PG-13 coffee affair has run its’ course. It’s time to mix things up. I’m talkin’ Java in one hand, H2O in the other. Living on the edge, if you will. Try not to spill, people. Or do, whatever. Just make sure it isn’t the coffee you’re wasting.
You’re probably thinking, why the hell would I add water to spice things up in my coffee life? First of all, if water didn’t exist, coffee wouldn’t either. Show some appreciation. After all, it is the season of giving thanks. But hey, while we’re living on the edge, I’ve got a challenge for you. (I’ll be taking this on, too) Before reaching for that first cup of coffee in the morning, or even a piece of toast, chug a glass of room temperature water. Now let me tell you why.
When we first wake up, our bodies are dehydrated after a night of fasting. Not only will you quench your body’s thirst, but say hello to a metabolism boost and get ready to feel the rush of your body waking up BEFORE you sip your coffee. As many studies have shown the numerous benefits of consuming coffee on a daily basis, everything cannot be perfect, right? Show your H2O some TLC. Don’t stall, just do it… and then you’ll be free to brew it.
Water kicks your body’s functions:
- In the morning, our bodies are in elimination mode. Drinking water can help you feel energized and ready for the challenges in the day ahead.
Hydration is essential:
- Coffee acts as a diuretic, which means it stimulates your kidneys in order to excrete sodium in the urine. When this happens, your body dehydrates even more since the body flushes the sodium along with the water it’s been holding all night. Water is also essential to your brain function, since your brain is 75% water as it is. Who doesn’t wake up hoping to have a successful and productive day? Water, my friend, has now become your best friend.
Coffee can lead to mineral deficiency, digestive problems and more.
- The acidity and compounds coffee contains may irritate your stomach lining. When coffee is consumed, your stomach produces hydrochloric acid. This is worse when you consume coffee on an empty stomach. If you’re an avid caffeine sipper (like myself), you already know this is a no-no. If you consume too much coffee, your body will kick into overdrive and produce more hydrochloric acid than needed, resulting in mineral deficiency and digestive problems. To minimize this damage, drink that clear stuff I’ve been talking about.
Water quenches your thirst:
- A lot of people drink coffee first thing in the morning because they’re thirsty. Drinking water will quench your thirst, helping you say no to that extra-large latte an hour later on your way to work.
