What Does Coffee Do to Your Hair?

Here's What Coffee Does to Your Hair

While it may seem like our goal in life is to travel the color wheel and take our hair along for the ride (does anyone even know their true color anymore?), draw the moisture right out of it with our blow-dryers and flat irons, throw it in a messy bun on a daily basis, constantly twirl the ends and sweep our fingers through the strands so they lay just so, our hair is pretty darn good to us. While the belief that laugh lines are a sign of a life well lived, the belief that a great day starts with good hair stands just as tall.

How many times have you woken up feeling like your hair went on an adventure last night and you weren’t invited? It seems it had a little too much fun and you’re left to pick up the pieces. What if I told you there was a  pick-me-up that could knock out two birds with one stone—a secret that could bring both you and your hair back to life repeatedly every morning? The answer is coffee. Coffee is always the answer.

5 Benefits of Using Coffee on Your Hair

1. Caffeine prevents hair loss.

Some people totally rock a receding hairline, but it's not ideal for everyone. Hair loss is a result of weak hair follicles, which affect the growth cycle of the hair. Wash your hair with brewed coffee twice a week to restore your mop.

  • Stimulates hair follicles
  • Triggers stronger growth
  • Contains antioxidants

2. Caffeine improves hair texture.

Coffee strengthens your strands from within, resulting in overall better quality and texture. When applied to hair directly, caffeine is absorbed by the follicles, giving a noticeably different appearance.

  • Softer-looking hair
  • Shinier hair
  • Additional body to your hair

3. Improves scalp circulation.

Coffee grounds are a great alternative to a hair mask—or you can do both with a coffee hair mask. Rub them in thoroughly for improved circulation and reap more benefits than that alone.

  • Gets rid of dead skin cells
  • Keeps scalp clean and fresh
  • Pushes out thicker, stronger hair once dead skin is gone

4. Coffee can enhance and darken your hair color.

Washing your hair with coffee will darken your color. This is more ideal for brunettes or someone looking to cover up some stubborn, stray grays. For pregnant women, it’s arguably the best solution of all. Steer clear if you’re a blonde or a redhead, unless you want to risk rocking muddy-looking hair. There’s a few reasons why washing hair with coffee is popular:

  • No harsh chemicals
  • Less expensive than the salon
  • More time-saving
  • Easy to apply

5. Coffee improves the overall glow of your hair.

Do you want your hair to shine bright like a diamond? Rinsing your hair with coffee can help you out.

  • Coffee tends to have a lower pH than water
  • Lower pH causes cuticles to remain flat
  • Flat cuticles reflect more light

If you wear your hair as a safety blanket and drink your coffee for other people’s safety, this method could be your savior. Don’t be greedy—caffeinate your hair too. After all, if you treat it well, it will always be there for you.
