Drink Your Coffee Black? You Might Be A Psychopath

February 21, 2024Coffee Talk
Twitter Facebook
Just like the junk in your pants, coffee is personal. With countless variations to suit every taste and preference—there’s no right way to drink what’s in your mug. Some prefer their coffee dark and intense, while others opt for a creamy, indulgent cup. But could your choice of coffee reveal something deeper about your personality? Some wild research suggests that there might be a connection between black coffee drinkers and certain psychopathic traits...

A study published in the journal Appetite examined the coffee preferences of over 1,000 adults and correlated them with various personality traits, including psychopathy. While we’re the last to judge—the findings were intriguing: individuals who preferred black coffee were more likely to exhibit traits associated with psychopathy compared to those who preferred their coffee with cream or sugar.

"WTF?” you might be saying, particularly if you take your coffee black. Don’t stress, you’re likely not a total lunatic—but here’s the traits often associated with both black coffee drinkers and psychopaths.

  • Preference for Bitterness: Black coffee is often described as bitter and intense, with a strong, bold flavor. Psychopathic individuals are known to seek out intense and novel experiences, and their preference for bitter foods and beverages may reflect this trait.
  • Tolerance for Discomfort: Drinking black coffee requires a certain level of tolerance for bold flavors, and when it’s not our coffee—bitter flavors. Studies suggest psychopaths may be more willing to endure discomfort or unpleasant sensations in pursuit of their goals, whether it's staying awake through a long night of work or simply swigging their cup of coffee.
  • Simplicity and Minimalism: Black coffee is the epitome of simplicity—a pure, unadulterated brew with no added frills or flavors. Psychopathic individuals often gravitate towards simplicity and minimalism in various aspects of their lives, eschewing unnecessary complexities and distractions. For them, black coffee may represent a streamlined and efficient way to get their caffeine fix without any extraneous embellishments.
  • Independence and Self-Reliance: Choosing to drink black coffee may also reflect a sense of independence and self-reliance. Psychopathic individuals tend to be self-assured and confident in their abilities, preferring to rely on themselves and their brew, rather than seeking support or dressing up their cup to make it more decadent.

WE'RE NOT DOCTORS: The link between black coffee preference and psychopathic traits is not absolute, so don’t ditch your black-coffee-consuming friends. And if you take it black, this isn’t an invitation to go Donnie Darko on us. Psychopathy is a complex personality construct with multiple factors at play, including genetics, upbringing, and environmental influences.

While there may be a correlation between black coffee preference and psychopathic traits, take this research with a grain of salt. How you choose to knock back your brew is a personal preference and not a definitive measure of your personality. It just happens to hit the nail on the head for your friends here at Death Wish Coffee.
