Brew Guide: The French Press

The French press is probably the most classic brewing method available. It's a staple in kitchens around the world and makes for a simple, yet bold cup of coffee every time. Despite its name, the French Press was actually patented by an Italian in the 1920s and the technology has remained the same ever since. The key to making a great french pressed pot is the grind of beans. Because this is a full emersion method having too fine of a grind could ultimately lead to a cup full of grounds. 

 

What you need:

  • 20 ounces of water 

  • 8 tablespoons of coffee 

  • Wooden spoon or stirrer 

  • French Press 

  • Kettle

  • Grinder

  • Coffee 

 

Step One: Grind Coffee 

Grind coffee to the coarse setting on your grinder. Beans should be similar to breadcrumbs. 

 

Step Two: Add Coffee 

Add 2.5 tablespoons of coffee ground coffee for every 6 ounces of water to the brewer.

 

Step Three: Add water 

Fill the French Press about half way with boiling hot water. 

 

Step Four: Place Top

Place the top onto the brewer and let the soaked coffee sit for 3 minutes.

 

Step Five: Push Down

Push the top all the way down so that the brewed coffee emerges from the grinds. This should take about 30 seconds.

 

Step Six: Pour 

Pour your coffee into a cup and enjoy.
