Death Wish Coffee asks – What the hell is a Hell Hound?
According to myths and legends, hell hounds are guardians of the underworld. They are usually depicted as large black dogs with red eyes and accompanied by flames.
Hell Hounds are known to take their jobs very seriously and never sleep, and honestly – we can relate.
There are some famous examples of hellhounds from around the world.
Like the eerie black dogs of English folklore that meet travelers on the road, and sometimes, bring an omen of death. Most famously depicted in the Sherlock Holmes story The Hound of the Baskervilles, theses spectral canines can certainly give you a fright if you find yourself on the English hillsides at night.
The Norse had their own version of the hell hound, Garmr, A supernatural wolf that fiercely protected its master Hel, the goddess of the underworld. Some stories speak of Garmr as the greatest of all dogs, kind of like the dog version of Odin himself.
The most widely known though is of course, Cerberus, the three-headed dog of Hades mentioned in The Odyssey.
He guarded the underworld so no souls could ever escape, until he was captured by the hero Hercules and unleashed onto the world.
But why did we do it?
Just like the three headed dog of legend, there are three different theories as to why this hell hound appears on our newest coffee mug.
Its officially spooky season. So what better way to enjoy your next mug of bold brew then with a loyal hellhound guarding it from any ghouls that might try and take it.
These beasts are notorious for never sleeping. With a fresh cup of Death Wish Coffee to start your day, we know you, too, will be fierce and awake, just like the hounds of hell.
