How to Make Natural Bug Repellent (and Coffee) using Lavender
This Plant Repels Mosquitos
The sun is finally shining, and seasonal depression has left the chat. There is nothing better than spending the dog days of summer outside, soaking up the rays and enjoying the coldest brews. That is until you hear that obnoxious buzzing in your ear, and you know your outdoor serenity is now ruined.
When the tiny little nuisances (AKA mosquitos) start to flock around, you naturally either A) move inside, which only means they win, or B) reach for chemical-laden sprays and lotions to kill the little devils, potentially poisoning yourself in the process. But what if there is a third option that is not only safe and chemical-free, but also smells good AND tastes great in coffee (we’ll get there)??
What Science Says
If you haven’t caught on by now, we are talking about lavender. Lavender may smell like a pretty little flower, but it can pack a powerful punch against even the most aggravating pests (only works on bugs though, not husbands). The reason lavender works so well is because it contains essential oils, primarily linalool and linalyl acetate, which are responsible for its pleasant scent and insect-repelling properties. These oils are toxic to many insects, making it a potent natural deterrent.
Benefits Of Using Lavender
Non-Toxic and Safe: Unlike your ex, lavender is non-toxic and safe around children and pets. You can enjoy its benefits without worrying about harmful side effects or environmental impact.
Pleasant Aroma: While many bug sprays have a harsh, unpleasant smell, lavender offers a calming and pleasant fragrance. It doubles as an air freshener, and who doesn’t love a good 2 for 1?
Multi-Functional: In addition to repelling bugs, lavender has other beneficial properties. It's known for its relaxing and sleep-inducing effects, ideal for winding down after a long day of chugging coffee. Lavender is also used in skincare for its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties.
