Death Wish Irish Coffee Recipe

By Teah Teriele — January 25, 2022 / Recipes

The Best Irish Coffee Recipe

Coffee cocktails have been a winter staple for quite some time now. Those endless cold, gray days call for a direct hit of caffeine and booze to shock the system. From espresso martinis, spiked egg nog lattes to the classic, Irish Coffee—there’s no shortage of booze + coffee combos out there. While Irish Coffee may be the most traditional, we’ve kicked it up a notch with double the amount of caffeine (thanks to Death Wish Coffee) and loads of more flavor.

Why is it Called Irish Coffee?

Irish Coffee was born out of necessity—in our opinion. Back in the 1940s on a stormy winter night on the west coast of Ireland, Irish Coffee made its mark. During this time, Foynes Airbase near Limerick was a key destination for air travel between the United States, Europe and Canada.

On this historical night, a passenger plane destined for New York had to turn around due to a winter storm over the Atlantic Ocean. The tired, cold and weary passengers returned to Foynes where Chef Joe Sheridan greeted them with a special coffee drink—known as the Irish Coffee. Fast forward 80 years later and we’re still savoring Irish Coffees, especially when Father Winter comes to town.

Death Wish Irish Coffee Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup freshly brewed Death Wish Coffee
  • 1 shot Irish Whiskey
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream or 1 can of unsweetened coconut milk*
  • 2 teaspoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon hot (preferably near boiling) water
  • 1 mason jar
  • 1 stemmed glass

*Refrigerate coconut milk for at least six hours. Replace teaspoon of maple syrup with 2 tablespoons confectioners' sugar.

Directions:

  1. Make frothed cream. Shake heavy cream and 1 teaspoon of maple syrup in freezing cold mason jar for two minutes. Place mason jar in freezer for up to 15 minutes before serving.
  2. Brew Death Wish Coffee. Grim Reaper Pro Tip: Brew the coffee using a French Press and use the excess water from the kettle to preheat your glass in the next step.
  3. Mix brown sugar and hot water in a stemmed glass until brown sugar is melted. If you prefer sweeter coffee, add more sugar.
  4. Pour ¾ cup Death Wish Coffee into glass with melted brown sugar and mix.
  5. Add the desired amount of whiskey to glass and stir.
  6. Float the cream on top by pouring it over the back of a spoon and onto your Irish Coffee. Do not stir or you will end up with coffee and cream.
  7. Serve immediately for optimal taste.
