Anti-Love: Death Metal Songs for Valentines Day

Valentine's Day is just around the corner — who cares, right? While everyone else is covered in stuffed animals and pastel colors you can play this list of songs at full volume. Pour yourself some brew as black as your heart and listen to these 10 Death Metal favorites.

RED BEFORE BLACK - CANNIBAL CORPSE

Veteran death metal band Cannibal Corpse just released their 14th studio album, Red Before Black. Filled with twelve punishing songs the title track is one of the best. (You can check out more about the band from drummer Paul Mazurkeiwicz on our show Fueled By Death Cast).

THE WAY OF THE VIKINGS - AMON AMARTH

You know what we love more than love songs? Songs about Vikings. Death Metal titans Amon Amarth hail from Sweden where Vikings roamed, and this song is one of their many odes to the culture off the band's first ever concept album.

DUNCAN HILLS COFFEE - DETHKLOK

The band Dethklok stems from the Cartoon Network show Metalocalpyse, and you would think it was a joke at first glance. But creator Brendan Small assembled a talented band of musicians to play crushing riffs with hilarious animation. This song is about coffee, so of course we love it.

ACCIDENT AND ERROR - ORIGIN

Origin is revered for their harsh death metal sound and incredible technical playing style. John Longstreth has been considered the fastest drummer int eh world multiple times, and it shows in one of the band's newest tracks. In this play-through video, John is also sporting a pretty great T-Shirt. (You can check out more about the band from John Longstreth on our show Fueled By Death Cast).

ROOTS BLOODY ROOTS - SEPULTURA

Legendary Brazilian band Sepultura was formed by brothers Max and Igor Cavalera in 1984 and the band has never stopped. A major force in the thrash and groove metal scenes in the 80s and 90s, they are always lumped into the over reaching 'death metal' category, constantly touring with bands that fit the bill. Their most famous track is Roots Bloody Roots and a favorite of anyone who likes heavy music.

ELITIST ONES - WHITECHAPEL

Named after the area where Jack the Ripper committed a series of murders, Whitechapel is a force to be reckoned with. Started in 2006 and influenced by death metal greats like Cannibal Corpse and Dying Fetus, this track begs to played at full volume on repeat. (You can hear more about the band from bassist Gabe Crisp when he was on Fueled By Death Cast).

RAINING BLOOD - SLAYER

I know - Slayer isn't necessarily 'death metal', but they have influenced just about every heavy band in existence since they started in 1981. They just announced their final tour this year and you can already hear the throngs of fans screaming "Slayer!" one last time. Their most widely known track is Raining Blood, and they had the chance to play it on The Tonight Show last year.

FROM WOMB TO WASTE - DYING FETUS

Dying Fetus had humble beginnings in 1991 and has since become one of the original heavy hitters in the death metal scene. They add infectious hooks to their brand of crushing music that constantly sets them apart from other acts in the genre. With a name like 'Dying Fetus" they invoke some really dark and demented imagery with their lyrics and this track is no different.

FROM SACRIFICE TO SURVIVAL - SKINLESS

These guys are local legends, hailing from the same area as The World's Strongest Coffee. Skinless started in 1992 and after signing to Relapse Records they started touring the world. They are known for melding death metal music with a hint of comedy, making their performances incredibly fun to attend. This video was recorded with a bunch of their fans in their hometown and shows exactly what the death metal scene is all about.

PULL THE PLUG - DEATH

Death is highly considered to be the main influence for the entire genre of death metal, starting their reign in 1983. In fact, you would be hard pressed to find someone who loves heavy music to not have heard of Death. The band is unfortunately no more after the death of singer , guitarist and founder Chuck Schuldiner in 2001, but their legacy will live forever.
