Death Wish Coffee Co. and Northway Brewing releasing Oat-bituary stout beer
The resurrection is here. Death Wish Coffee Co. is back 2 years later with a new beer, this time as part of a collaboration with Northway Brewing Co of Queensbury, New York. The beer, called Oat-bituary, is an oatmeal stout made with Death Wish Coffee, cacao nibs, and vanilla bean.
Years ago, Death Wish Coffee worked with Olde Saratoga Brewing Company on a line of craft beers. And even though Death Wish Coffee is collaborating with a new brewery, there’s a familiar face behind it all.
“Over the last few years, we’ve had countless opportunities to collaborate with many great local brewers. The timing just wasn’t right for us. When Max called a few months ago and said members of his team from Olde Saratoga Brewing were coming back together to work at Northway Brewing, we immediately got excited,” John Swedish, director of strategic engagement and partnerships at Death Wish Coffee, said. “We have a special relationship with Max and his team. His work within our community and commitment to charity is very important to us and any partnership we get involved with. We look forward to continuing that work with Max, his team, and Northway Brewing Co.”
Max Oswald is the former general manager of Olde Saratoga Brewing Company and current general manager at Northway Brewing Company. To both Death Wish Coffee and Northway Brewing, working together again comes with a sense of nostalgia.
“I had kind of dropped out of the beer business for a bit, but when I was able to reunite with the Olde Saratoga team, one thing sort of led to another and things fell in place, so it’s been neat to be back with Death Wish. There’s a lot of nostalgia and history there,” Oswald said. “There’s been percolation in the market wondering what happened and where is a Death Wish beer, and people are just pumped for this. It makes sense to pull [craft beer and Death Wish] together. We’re drinking craft beer, we’re drinking Death Wish coffee — let’s pull them together.”
The beer will officially be released this Friday, January 10 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Saratoga City Tavern. At the event, there will be samples and pint specials and a sneak peek at future Northway Brewing and Death Wish Coffee collaborations. There will be a live broadcast with 104.5 The Team ESPN Radio’s Levack and Goz from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. The event is open to the public.
“The release of the Oat-bituary is the kickoff to a new direction for the brewery,” Oswald said. “We’re going to maintain our core, but partnerships and unique one-offs and small-batch beers will be part of what we do.”
Hard coffee and coffee beers are an up and coming trend in both the coffee and alcohol industry. What makes Oat-bituary unique, though, is that it’s made with a special grind of Death Wish Coffee. Brewers at Northway Brewing will treat the coffee much as we do hops in some of their IPAs. They will circulate brite beer over the coffee in our hop torpedo until they get the perfect amount of coffee aroma, taste, and finish.
Working with Death Wish before has helped us perfect this process and this beer. However, for some of the lighter and hoppier beers that we have planned, we will use completely different processes based on beer style and how we want to manage the coffee influence.
Oat-bituary will be available for purchase at Price Chopper grocery stores, all area beverage centers, and independent retailers in the coming weeks. It will also be sold at Northway Brewing company, located at 1043 U.S. 9, Queensbury, NY 12804.
Oat-bituary will also be available at Broken Resolutions Beer Fest, located at Northway Brewing from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, January 18. Proceeds from the event will benefit Acct Naturally, a local non-profit focused on off-track thoroughbreds interacting with veterans, first responders, and teens. Death Wish Coffee will also be at the event providing samples of brewed coffee and cold brew.
