Death Wish Coffee Company is made up of a small but growing team. We want to take you inside our headquarters and introduce you to some of the team members that make it all come together.
As an integral part of the production team, John Bennett works on making sure all of your one pound bags and Death Cups orders are filled to the brim and ready for brewing. He's also become a really amazing Knock Out player on our basketball hoop.
How long have you been working with Death Wish and what do you do here?
I've worked for Death Wish for just over eight months. Currently, I'm training to run the Viking which weighs, fills and produces our one pound bags of DWC and Valhalla Java. I also fill retail and Death Cup orders.
What’s something you’ve learned about coffee by working here?
So since working here, I learned that when coffee is roasted, gasses form inside the bean. After roasting, gasses (mostly carbon dioxide) start seeping out(degassing). When coffee is a few days old and very fresh, a bulk of the carbon dioxide formed leaves your beans. During this time, CO2 escapes so quickly it negatively affects the flavor of your coffee by creating an uneven extraction. This degassing process is the reason roasters start selling their coffee a few days to a week after the roast date.
What does a typical day like for you?
It always starts with a hot cup of DWC. I come into work a little early to start the machines up and set up for the day. Then lunch with the rest of the production crew and before I know it I'm home eating dinner getting ready for the next day.
How much coffee do you drink?
LOL probably three cups and a nitro brew.
What do you do for fun?
I like listening to music, hanging with friends and playing basketball.
What’s something that goes on in the warehouse that people would be surprised to learn?
We like to move around in the warehouse. The whole production team plays basketball on lunch every day.
