Meet Death Wish: Dave Ferreira, Roaster

Death Wish Coffee Company is made up of a small but growing team. We want to take you inside our headquarters and introduce you to some of the team members that make it all come together.

If you're a fan of Death Wish coffee's bold, dark roast flavor then there is someone you should thank: Dave Ferreira, our in-house roaster.  In the two years that he's been with our team, his knowledge and passion for roasting coffee beans have grown immensely. Outside of work he's also a craft beer and food connoisseur, aka he's love to eat good food and drink a local pint.

How long have you been working with Death Wish and what do you do here?

I have been with Death Wish for two years and I work here as the Roaster.

What have you learned about the coffee industry that surprised you?

One thing that really surprised me is just the seemingly endless variety of beans that are grown. I have been roasting for over a year and have only worked with a very small amount of the available varietals.

What does a typical day look like for you? How much coffee do you drink?

On a typical day, I'll drink a cup or two at home before coming in a little early to do whatever maintenance and cleaning that the roaster needs. Then I'll warm up the roaster and take care of whatever grinding is necessary for our single serve and packaging machines. After that, I'll grab another coffee and pump out as much roasted coffee as possible before the end of the day. In total, I usually consume at least 4-5 cups of coffee by the end of the day.

What do you do for fun?

In my spare time, you can usually find me researching everything I can about coffee. From the farm to cup, I try and learn something new about the industry every day. As for non-coffee related, I usually am found cramming as many calories as possible into my mouth or drinking some local craft beer.

What’s something that goes on at HQ that people would be surprised to learn?

People might be surprised to learn how much of a small family we've become in production. We all try and eat lunch together and spend our break together whenever possible. We even often hang out outside of work. Forging these relationships goes a long way in making work an enjoyable experience as well as being able to push each other to get as much done as possible.

Meet the rest of the Death Wish team.
