Here’s what coffee does to your growth

Can coffee stunt your growth? 

If you want to get technical, living without coffee will certainly stunt your social growth. However, there is no scientifically valid evidence to suggest that coffee will actually stunt your physical growth.  

Recent studies have been performed to measure the difference in bone density between teens who drink a lot of coffee and those who drink a minimal amount. Eighty-one teenagers were tracked over the course of 6 years and studied to reveal the truth over the reputation caffeine has developed on growth. Studies revealed no difference in bone mass between the two groups. 

This myth may come from the misconception that coffee causes Osteoporosis, a condition that may be associated with the loss of height. Blaming coffee for slowing your growth due to Osteoporosis can be risky due to a couple factors:

  • Coffee does not cause Osteoporosis.
  • Osteoporosis does not routinely cause a lack of height.

Because most growth occurs long before most people are consuming coffee, there is no direct correlation since most people have reached their peak height. The assumption that coffee causes an increased risk of Osteoporosis was brought on by a couple reasons:

  • Caffeine can eliminate the body’s consumption of calcium.
  • Lack of calcium can contribute to Osteoporosis.

When these studies were analyzed, it came to surface that coffee drinkers in general consume less milk and other beverages that contain calcium. Overall, the increased risk of Osteoporosis was most likely a result of the dietary intake of calcium and vitamin D among coffee drinkers, rather than the coffee itself.

The bottom line is, if your parents are short, it may just be in your genes. Luckily for you, if you listen to them by drinking your milk and eating a balanced diet when you’re young, you’re more likely to reach the maximum height “allowed” by your genes.
